Spermatology: in vitro capacitation and fertilization

Estimating the fertility of a semen sample or of a male by simple assessment of in vitro sperm characteristics is still difficult. Thus, we work on the development of laboratory tests to evaluate the fertile potential of a sperm sample in a fast and accurately manner. I mainly study the sperm changes that occur during the process of fertilization that can be keys to determining the reproductive success. In this line, we observed how fertility differences between males were related to the way that sperm capacitation takes place. These changes did not occur in all spermatozoa, so we could identify various sperm subpopulations and determine their roles in fertilization.
